Cómo pasar todo tu correo a GMail

Ya hacía varias semanas que tenía pendiente el escribir un artículo sobre el Google GMail Loader, y no lograba encontrar el rato adecuado, pero creo que de ésta no pasa, así que aquí va...

Empecemos por el principio... ¿que tal con vuestras cuentas de correo? Seguro que tenéis más de una, ¿no?. Yo al menos, sí. Y precisamente, a la que más me solían (bueno, y todavía suelen) escribir pertenecía a un proveedor que no se ha acomodado a las nuevas capacidades de las cuentas de correo y... claro... se me hacía un eterno sufrimiento el tener que estar continuamente borrando mensajes para hacerle hueco a los nuevos, y con la cuenta saturándose cada poco... Y la cuestión es que, por espacio, tampoco debería de estar tan agobiado. El problema principal eran todos los mensajes históricos que tenía almacenados en la cuenta y que tampoco quería borrar, ni pasar a un cliente de correo que a lo mejor tengo que cambiar o no puedo consultar desde cualquier sitio.

Pensaba yo... como molaría poderlos pasar todos a GMail donde tengo espacio a dar y tomar, y además lo tengo ahí todo organizadito con etiquetas... Pero claro, la cosa se complica cuando, ni mi antiguo webmail puede exportar, ni GMail puede importar. Pues la cuestión fue ponerse a googlear, probar algunas opciones hasta que al final dí con Google GMail Loader, el programa que nombraba ahí arriba.

¿Qué es Google GMail Loader?

Un programa escrito en Python que permite traspasar a nuestra cuenta GMail todos los mensajes de correo que tengamos almacenados en alguno de estos medios:

Cliente de correo Netscape, Mozilla, Thunderbird, Evolution...
Algún otro cliente que use el formato mBox
El correo almacenado en servidores con formato Maildir (los que usan un fichero por mensaje como QMail, Postfix, Exim...)
Otros formatos como MDF (Mutt, SCO Unix), MH NMH MEssaging System) o Babyl (Emacs RMAIL)

Para la gente que utilice Outlook, en la página web del programa se comenta que se puede hacer el truco de importar el correo de Outlook a Outlook Express y de ahí a Thunderbird y así conseguiríamos hacer lo mismo con mensajes que pudiéramos tener guardados en este programa.

¿Cómo hace la transferencia de los correos?

Pues la hace leyendo los correos en el formato que están almacenados y actuando como servidor SMTP que los re-envía a nuestra cuenta de correo como si alguien acabase de enviar los mensajes en este momento

¿Funciona?

Pues sí, a mí me funcionó perfectamente. Bueno, en alguno de los dos mil y pico mensajes que envié se me quedó un poco frito, pero fue cuestión de darle Control+C en la ventana de comandos un momento y ya continuó con el siguiente (y yo ya tomé nota de cual fallaba para re-enviarle después). Aquí por ejemplo está una captura del envío de uno de mis bloques de cuatrocientos y pico mensajes:

¿Y cómo aparecen luego los mensajes que envías?

Pues aparecen todos en el Inbox o Bandeja de entrada de la cuenta de GMail, con los datos del remitente original que te los había enviado, pero con la fecha y hora en la que hemos ejecutado el programa que los reenviaba. Bueno, concretamente, en su interior tienen puesta la fecha de envío que tuvieron en su día (cuando los abres del todo se puede ver), pero como GMail pone a los mensajes la fecha en la que él los recibe en todas las listas (y para las búsquedas), tienen la fecha actual. Pero eso, me temo, no hay manera de solventarlo de motu propio.

¿Entonces como puedo pasar todo mi correo a GMail con esta herramienta?

Yo te cuento más o menos como lo hice yo:

Instalar un cliente de correo de los compatibles con este software, como Thunderbird o Evolution, que era el que tenía yo de serie en mi Ubuntu.
Configurar el cliente de correo con los datos del servidor en el que tenemos almacenado el correo (sea POP3 o IMAP), y bajarnos todo el correo de allí a nuestro ordenador local. Se puede hacer todo a la vez, pero yo aquí opté por hacerlo separándolo en las carpetas por las que lo tenía ordenado, pues así tengo dos ventajas: el poder reorganizarlo mejor cuando lo suba y subirlo por bloques (cada carpeta se sube por separado) por si hay algún problema.
Descargar el Google Gmail Loader desde su página (aparte de versión Linux, también hay versión Windows).
En mi caso concreto, como no tenía instalados los Python MegaWidgets, tuve que instalarles, lo que en Ubuntu se hace con:
sudo apt-get install python-pmw
Descomprimir el programa y ejecutarlo, lo que en Ubuntu se hace tecleando simplemente:
python gmlw.py
Pulsar el botón "Find" en el programa para escoger el directorio (en mi caso dentro del directorio .evolution de mi directorio inicial) donde el cliente de correo almacenaba lso emails que me había bajado.
Seleccionar en "File Type" el tipo de fichero en el que estaban almacenados los mensajes, que en mi caso eran mBox (Netscape, Mozilla, Thunderbird).
Escribir mi dirección de correo Gmail en la casilla "Enter Your GMail Address".
Aunque es opcional, dar al botón "Save Log" y escoger un fichero donde se quede registrado todo el envío de correos que se hace, por si alguno se resiste, para que sepamos cuál es.
Pulsar al botón "Send To GMail".

¿Algo más que contar?

Únicamente que mientras se hace el envío de mensajes os fijéis en la ventana, pues se van a ir viendo allí uno por uno los mensajes enviados. Si en alguna ocasión se os queda "atrancado" alguno, simplemente hay que dar a Control+C, se suprimirá el envío de ese mensaje y se continuará con el siguiente sin problemas.

Pues ya está, esto es todo, espero que ésto le pueda ser útil a alguien. A mí, por lo menos, sí que me lo fue, que ahora he podido vaciar la antigua cuenta de correo, optar por redireccionar todo el correo de allí a GMail, y centralizar un poco mejor mi correo en una sola cuenta, que se agradece pero un montón.
