Poca gente debe de haber en estos momentos en nuestro país que no conozca a Pau Gasol y la tremenda generación de jugadores que ha llevado a la selección española de baloncesto a conseguir el campeonato del mundo el año pasado y casi el de Europa hace unos meses. Sin embargo, si dejamos a un lado los hinchas del baloncesto, no tanta gente ha oído hablar de Ricky Rubio, jugador que pude ver en directo hace unos días en la cancha del Baloncesto León y al que dedico este artículo. Si continúa su vertiginoso progreso sobre las canchas no sería de extrañar que en unos años siguiera o incluso llegase a superar los pasos de Pau.

¿Quién es Ricky Rubio? Pues un chaval de 17 años recién cumplidos, con 192 centímetros de altura, una enorme agilidad de juego y sobre todo una defensa prodigiosa que lleva ya dos años (y unas semanas) jugando en la liga ACB en el Joventut de Badalona. Sí, sí... como leéis, dos años en la máxima categoría del baloncesto español, y es que debutó en esta categoría a finales del 2005 procedente de equipos inferiores de su club cuando aún le faltaba una semana para cumplir los 15 años, batiendo así todos los récords existentes de precocidad en esta categoría. Pero la cosa no se queda ahí, porque cuando podría ser un jugador de banquillo por su corta edad, en realidad se ha convertido en estos dos años en una pieza importante de su equipo, actual líder de la liga y que cuenta con grandes jugadores como su propio compañero de equipo Rudy Fernández. Justo fue a él al que dejó en segundo lugar el año pasado para acabar como líder de balones robados de la liga regular (además de ser elegido jugador revelación de la temporada) y este año empieza a tomar también responsabilidades anotadoras.

Pero si hablemos de él, lo que no podemos dejar de mencionar es su actuación en la final del campeonato de Europa en categoría cadete en el verano del año pasado, que le hizo abrirse un hueco en la prensa deportiva porque, atención a los datos, en ese partido anotó nada menos que 51 puntos, capturó 24 rebotes, repartió 12 asistencias y realizó 7 robos de balón. Estadísticas de fábula que son las que hacen que su club lo cuide especialmente. En primer lugar asegurándosele para él con clausulas millonarias. En segundo lugar intentando protegerle de sí mismo impidiendo su contacto con la prensa, pues incluso algunas páginas web advierten que parece mostrar algunos signos de tener un gran ego que podrían dejarle estancado si no sigue trabajando. Esperemos que ésto no ocurra, porque todo apunta muy bien para él si sigue su trayectoria: algunos medios ya hablan de que podría llegar a ser convocado para jugar con la selección en los juegos olímipicos de Pekín, y más de una página dedicada a la NBA apunta a que si decidiera participar podría ser elegido en las primeras posiciones (incluso ha llegado a posicionarse como el numero uno) en el draft de la NBA del 2009, el mismo año en que cumpliría 19.

Esperemos que, como poco, siga progresando como ha hecho hasta ahora, sin creerse nada antes de serlo y nos haga disfrutar de trepidantes partidos de baloncesto.
